What are the factors that influenced your choice of architecture?
The fact that architecture is a profession that is productive, dynamic and prioritises creativity attracted my attention at that time. Understanding how I could bring spatial solutions to human life during the university years made me love my profession more. I think the positive added value we can bring to life and the feeling of learning something new every day and contributing to our own development process are the best aspects of doing this profession.
How would you evaluate the current state of architecture in our country? What are the new trends on the agenda?
With the 2000s, concepts such as sustainability, ecology, green building, energy saving started to enter the architectural agenda. With these concepts, our buildings are now striving to become smarter and more respectful to our resources. I think we are currently at a stage of awareness raising. This process should develop in terms of both professionals, investors and users. Only then can it find the right meaning. Of course, in this way, interior designs also have similar concerns. It is important to use the right materials in the right functions and to determine the preferences correctly while designing. We are developing ourselves in this direction.
What is the best expression that summarises your architectural line, your architectural stance in your works?
There are actually two issues that the architect goes back and forth within himself. The balance between the ego of the architect and the user demands. There is no limit to what you can do with the combination of the education you receive and the experience you have gained. The important thing is not what the architect wants, but the user’s need and demand. In my opinion, a good architect is the architect who establishes this balance well. I shape my line according to this point of view.
What kind of materials do you prefer to use in floor design in your projects?
Obviously, the materials used on the floor should be chosen correctly. It is a complete comfort condition for me. Building and space functions should be decisive for selection. The architect should be able to choose the right material suitable for each area.
How do you think the choice of floor material has an effect/power on the perception of space?
I think that the perception of space is closely related to the whole designed space. The relationship between all the choices in the designed space and their usage patterns are considered from the very beginning. Of course, the floor forms the background of the space in a sense. For this reason, a good visual will positively affect the design as a whole.
Among the places you have visited, which place has impressed you the most with its floor design?
The floors of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II Shopping Centre in Milan were very impressive. It still preserves its vitality with the harmony of colours and defying the years. Since the glass dome on the ceiling is very magnificent, it may perhaps reduce its perception to some extent.
Do you try to evaluate the ecological contributions of material technology to design in your projects?
Of course we have to in order to protect our natural resources.
How do you bring together your perspective on architecture with the personal needs, demands and lifestyles of your customers in your projects?
Here we need to understand the person in front of you, the need well. It is necessary to be open to communication, to understand, and then to interpret correctly. For this reason, I prefer to listen first. The design process only begins when I am left to myself. In this thinking and designing process, I try to carry out the process by blending my knowledge, experience and talent with the need in front of me. With the interviews, we try to reach the result that satisfies everyone.
How do you foresee the transformation of architecture in the dilemma of globalisation and staying local?
Of course, our profession keeps pace with the globalising world. While our needs that make us who we are, our way of life remain local, one of our faces is also facing the world. It will find its balance in itself somehow.
Are there any areas you enjoy being interested in other than architecture?
I see my profession as my hobby at the same time. I try to read in this field in my time outside of work. I am a lecturer in design courses in the interior architecture department at the university. I think it feeds me.
